3 Ways to Tune in Forza Horizon 5

The first time you open Forza Horizon 5’s tuning menu, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed. What do all of these settings actually do? Will tuning make my car faster or handle better?

Here’s the thing: you don’t need to become a tuning wizard. But understanding just a little about tuning can dramatically improve your driving experience.

So where do you start?

Well after reading this, you’ll have a firm grasp of your options and an excellent free tool to help you on your way.

A Word on Default or Storefront Setups

At first, you may choose to avoid tuning completely. You can download tunes from the storefront or simply leave the default tune as you upgrade. Both approaches are understandable. You can get decent results and avoid the hassle entirely.

But you might sense something is missing, especially if you are someone who likes to tinker or customize. And some upgrades really throw off your tune.

Let’s look at several ways you can get your upgraded vehicles to behave in predictable ways that match your driving style.

3 Ways to Customize Your Tunes

After 15 years of helping people tune in Forza, I’ve seen three main tuning methods emerge.

Each works, but each also brings its own trade-offs. Here’s the quick rundown:

  • Tune by Hand (from default settings)
You go in, make changes, test, tweak, repeat. If you love tinkering and have excessive amounts of free time, this can be rewarding. But it’s easy to get stuck. Some people spend months trying to figure out one car. I’ve been there too: one fix leads to another problem, and you can spend hours chasing balance, and re-reading the descriptions next to each setting.
  • META Tuning
These are setups or techniques people figured out through extensive trial and error and then deemed them the most effective tactics available (META). You learn from their hard-won experience shared in YouTube videos, online posts, or tutorials. These tunes often take advantage of quirks or bugs in the game. Or they use extreme values to nullify settings, and make it easier to make everything work together. But they can make the cars feel unrealistic and kind of empty. Like most things online!
  • Realistic Tuning (Physics-First)
The final and most sophisticated option for a base tune is what I call physics-first tuning. These tunes use game-matching physics to calculate each setting: springs, dampers, alignment, aero, and more together. The goal is a balanced, predictable car that feels natural to drive. It’s like a guitar with all the strings working together. The beauty of this approach is you can change the balance and behavior of the car at will. But here’s the catch: doing this by hand is impractical.

Why I Recommend Physics-First Tuning

The main reason I like realistic tuning is because it’s easy to customize to our driving preferences. And no one setting dominates the setup which gives you predictable responses.

Most people miss out on this physics-first approach to tuning, and get pulled into one of the other two approaches. This is a shame for two reasons:

  • Pure trial and error tuning wastes a lot of time. Even most of the tutorials on YouTube are a long list of complicated rules to remember and apply each time. You could spend that time driving…
  • Most meta tuning pushes the game further from reality, which is a shame because Forza has such a great physics engine.

A Shortcut to Balanced, Realistic Tuning

What if we could make realistic and fast setups quickly, and easily adjust them to our driving?

That is why I created the ForzaTune app.

It applies real engineering logic and math to give you a solid, fast base tune in about 60 seconds. You enter a few car stats, pick your driving situation, and get settings that work together. From there, you hit the road and fine tune.

Ready to try physics-first tuning without the complexity?

If you’re reading this on your phone or tablet, you are welcome to download the completely free and functional version of ForzaTune. Get it for iOS here and for Android here.

Once you’re in the app, pick a car you’ve been struggling with. Try the recommended settings. Take it for a drive and then use the tune adjustment options (shown in the image below).

You’ll feel the difference.

And when you’re ready to go deeper, the app is ready for you with more options like gearing, or even a pro version. But if you’re just starting out, the free version will serve you well.

Alright, go put that app to use if you haven’t already. You’ve got this.
